FP Book Club #10

Hey Guys!

I know it has been a while, but figured it was about time for our next FP Book Club, this month’s book is 1984 by George Orwell.
Now I know this quite a well-known novel, but I have actually never read it until now. For those of you who haven’t read, like I hadn’t, the novel is set in a dystopian London in 184 (funnily enough), the world is run by one autocratic party with ‘big brother’ as the all-seeing and knowing leader. The party run everything, controlling how people think, feel and even interact with each other. The story follows the character Winston in his inner (and a little outer) battle with the party and how he feels about them and how he wants the world to be.
Having never read it, I didn’t really know what to expect. It is one of those books that everyone tells you have to read but I just never really got round to it. I have to say I did really enjoy it and part of me wishes I had read it earlier. I know it was written in 1949 during the Second World War, but some of the arguments and storylines are scarily real to today and a lot of history after it was written – I mean people being arrested and worse for disagreeing with the government, that’s not exactly to far from the truth in some of the countries in the world today.
Again I have never ready any George Orwell, so I didn’t know if I would like this writing, but I really enjoyed it. It was really easy to read and again really relatable. He really managed to bring the characters to life and engage you all the way through. You really feel for Winston and understand his struggles and thoughts throughout. One thing I will say is that I can completely understand why a lot of teachers and schools pick this book as one to study in an English class, there is so much to pull apart.
As I said I really enjoyed it and I think I will even read some more of George Orwell’s books. What do you think of this book? Let me know and remember to keep up-to-date with all book club stuff on Goodreads. Next month’s book will be Feminist Fight Club: An Office Survival Manual for a Sexist Workplace by Jessica Bennett, get reading!
