Fashion Polaroids Book Club #6

Hey Guys!

Hope you are well. My reading in the last wee while has really improved, I don’t know whether it is the darker nights, because I mean who doesn’t love curling up with a coffee and a book when it is windy and rainy outside, whatever it is I am glad I am reading more I am now more than halfway through my reading challenge on Goodreads. Bearing that in mind I figured it was time for another book club instalment.
This month’s book is As Old as Time: A Twisted Tale by Liz Braswell. The book is a take on the classic fairytale Beauty and the Beast, but it tells the story as if Belle’s mother was the enchantress who cursed the beast. It is a little darker than the Disney story and although it is probably described as a ‘young adult’ novel, I’d say it is essentially a fairy tale for grownups.
Now, Beauty and the Beast is my all-time favourite Disney movie, I love the story and everything about it, so when I heard about this book from Paige I was interested to see what it was going to be like. I really enjoyed it, it is a lot darker than the movie (but you’d probably expect that) but I think that’s why I liked it – although it is the same story as the original, it feels very different.
The book is written from when the original story starts from, but it also goes back to before Belle was even born. I really liked that it had this extra element, you got to learn about Belle’s parents and how they met as well as the world they lived in. There is a lot more mention of magic in this version, I know that would seem silly as a story about an enchanted castle would surely always have a lot of stuff about magic in it, but in this version you get a lot more context to it if that makes sense. There is a magical community as it were.

I really enjoyed the whole story behind why the beast was cursed and that added element the book has. I also really enjoyed that it wasn’t exactly a happy ending, it was a bit more complex than just Belle falling in love with the beast and breaking the spell.
All in all, if you are a fan of fairy tales and magical stories I think you’d like this. It is a great adaptation of the story and portrays it in a darker light.
