Winter Essentials

Hey Guys,

Now, I'm a big fan of shopping and clothes in general so the last few weeks I have been watching a lot of YouTube winter faves videos and reading a lot of blog posts about what everyone is loving for winter both beauty and fashion essentials, so I thought I'd jump on the bandwagon. I'm going to try share both my clothing and beauty essentials with you, plus any other extras I think of.

Clothes

I am a naturally cold person, so as soon as it gets to a certain temperature I automatically give up on light jackets and go straight for cosy winter coats, layers and scarves, so I love winter clothes. This year I had to get myself a new winter coat as I didn't really have the cosiest of ones from the previous years. I opted for a fur lined parka from Topshop (you'll soon learn that I pretty much live there)
This coat is great because it keeps me so warm and although it was on the pricey side I know it is going to last a good few winters. One positive of Topshop is that they offer a 10% student discount, which does make a great difference if you like me are a shopping addict, but have a smaller budget than you would like. The lining of the jacket is also removable to this jacket can be warm for a lot longer than just the coldest months.

I am a huge hat lover and so as soon as winter comes I really look forward to getting my cosy beanies and bauble hats out. I am still wearing my hat from last year as it is really warm and cosy.
I have also recently bought my self a newer hat which I originally saw on Zoella (I really love her blog and YouTube videos) and I instantly went on the hunt for it online and in-store. It is a simple black beanie from New Look with the slogan "Bad Hair Day" on it and I love it. It is so easy to wear with anything and is also super cosy and warm as the material is much thicker than some other beanies.
Hat: £6.99 New Look

The only negative of a hat is hat hair....but hey I'd rather have warm ears rather than freeze!

I wear a lot of dresses and skirts all year round, however at this time of year it can get really cold wearing dresses etc when you don't have a decent pair of tights....this is where Primark come in. They sell the best tights ever for whatever time of year, they are reliable, comfy and you don't have to pay over the odds for them. At winter time their best tights have to be the super cosy tights which are only £3.50. They are the best tights ever created in my opinion, they are super thick and have a fleeced lining.
Tights: £3.50 Primark

These tights are a must have at this time of year if you are a lover of dresses like myself. Sadly, one pair wont be quite enough to last all winter so I try to pick up a good couple of pairs as they do tend to was out after a month or so, but at £3.50 they are a bargain.

As I mentioned I am a big lover of dresses and skirts. I think they are so easy to wear at all times of the year and can easily be super casual or formal. So my winter essentials wouldn't be right if I didn't include a couple of dress and skirts now would it?!

As I previously mentioned I love Topshop, if I could I would own the majority of the stock and have shares in the brand. My friends joke that Philip Green (CEO of Arcadia- the group which owns Topshop) must rub his hands every time I get paid because I am known to spend a large amount of them in Topshop every month. Anyway, that's normally my go to shop for dresses and skirts both casual and formal. This season tartan is really on trend, and I wouldn't be a proper Scottish gal if I didn't invest in some tartan. I got myself this lovely mini skirt from Topshop, which I wear out on nights out without tights (if I'm feeling brave) or with tights and a jumper for a more casual look.

I love cut and tailoring of this skirt. The fact that it has pockets really just adds to as well (regardless of the fact that I will probably never use them..) they just really give an extra touch. The skirt itself is very thick, so it feels well made and likely to last a good amount of time.
Primark has also caught onto the tartan trend in a big way with a large number of tartan dresses and other fun stuff. I picked up a red and green tartan dress with a collar and a bow on it and a tartan scarf last time I was in.
Dress: £15 Primark Scarf: £5 Primark

Recently, my love for Primark has really come back, this season they have a lot of really nice things. I used to work at Primark, and I think working in such a busy store really put me off the brand because I got very sick of looking at the same clothes and the store during my shifts, so once I left I did tend to avoid the shopping in the big Edinburgh Primark as it is aways so busy and messy. I prefer the Primark in Livingston, it isn't as busy and although it is smaller than Edinburgh it still has a lot of stock in it and it can be a wee bit better organised due to its size. I know that from working in Edinburgh it can be quite difficult to keep on top of the hectic atmosphere in the store on a busy Saturday, and that can make it a quite unpleasant shopping environment. The Livingston store just sometimes seems a little more relaxed making shopping a in it a bit more enjoyable.

I also bought another much more casual dress from Topshop which is really comfy for those days when you just want to be comfy, and I often wear it to work.

I have quite a few dresses similar to this one from previous years, they are just very simple to wear for work because they are so comfortable and go with all sorts of shoes (flats, boots, heels, even converse).
My final winter dress which I have been wearing a lot comes from Urban Outfitters, which is surprising because I don't often shop in there. I was oddly in there looking for a gift for someone else, and picked this up - I know, not exactly very good gift buying.

I wear this a lot because it is so comfortable. I haven't worn it on its own yet, I'm not sure how it will look, I tend to just wear it over shirts, blouses, jumpers and t-shirts. I really like layering things under dresses so this dress is perfect for that.

I don't live in just skirts an dresses, however I'm not a huge fan of jeans, so I am always drawn to leggings and formal joggers when it comes to trousers. I love disco pants, they are my go to leggings at the moment and have been for the last year...I own quite a few pairs, the ones I got most recently were a pair by Daisy Street on Asos for £22.99. I'm not a huge fan of the coloured ones, so I go for the black ones every time.
Another pair of leggings that I recently got again from Topshop...are these gorgeous grey ones

I think I may be a little in love with these leggings, they are just the perfect winter leggings! They are a really simple but interesting pattern, which can be worn with pretty much anything. They are really thick so they keep you warm, and the fact that they have a zip on the side of them adds a bit of extra detail to them. I haven't really haven't had them off since I bought, apart from the couple of days between them being washed obviously.

When it comes to being comfy at work and on lazy days of course I have the customary pairs of sweatpants (what student doesn't) but I can't exactly wear those to work or in certain social situations. This is wear the 'casual jogger' trend comes in very handy. they are essentially socially acceptable sweatpants which look smart and are super comfy. I have several pairs, my fave at the moment are these leopard print ones from Topshop...again, which are now on sale...yay!!

These are so easy to wear on days where you have to look smart but really aren't in the mood. They are really soft and comfortable. These are my go to work trousers, I wear them with either a shirt tucked in or a big baggy jumper depending on my mood, I just think that comfort is the most important thing, and if you can look good to then it's a bonus and these trousers make that possible.

in terms of winter tops and jumpers I tend to stick to simple baggy t-shirts because I like how they sit and they are relatively easy to wear. I love big baggy jumpers too, at them moment my stand out one have to be this lovely quilted grey jumper from Topshop.

I just like that this jumper can be worn in so many different ways, on its own, tucked into a skirt, with a shirt/blouse under it...its so versatile. I like a lot of simple colours, like grey and white this jumper did come in a pinky colour, but I personally prefer the grey, but that's just me.

Winter shoes for me are simple, I pretty much live in my Ugg boots as it gets colder! I do have a pair of lovely riding boots which I got a few years ago which I do also wear religiously during the winter months. My white converse also get worn, but not as often as my boots because of the canvas material they are made of, your feet do get really cold much quicker.

Cosy PJ's are also absolutely essential for me in winter, Primark actually are the best when it comes to pyjamas, they aren't to expensive, always have fun designs and they last...that's where I've been going for all my winter PJ's...they even have Christmas themed ones and that's amazing!!!

Beauty

At this time of year as it gets colder, my priority is keeping my skin moisturised and soft. I have really dry skin on my hands all year round, but the winter really does aggravate them and make them worse, so I always try to make sure they are extra moisturised at this time of year. I have been trying to find a really good hand cream for years and have really struggled to find one if I'm honest. My friend Zoe recently recommended this really great hand cream from The Body Shop to me. Its called Hemp Hand Protector you put it on over night and it helps keep your hands soft, and from what I've seen from her it seems to be really good so I am going to make sure I get this as part of my daily routine.

My second priority is my lips and keeping them soft too. I use quite a lot of different lip balms because I always have a lot of different ones in my bag. for winter I have 3 key ones though. The first one was actually a gift from my friend Zoe when she was living in France. Its the Nuxe RĂªve de Miel
Ultra-Nourishing Lip Balm, luckily you can get it here as well.

I use this one before I go to bed because it is quite thick and isn't the nicest to wear all day because I am very aware of it on my lips.

My next one is also another gift, my mum go me this from QVC of all places. She is a really big fan of Gatineau and has a lot of their skin care products. She got a Duo of the Defilift 3D Perfect Design Revolumising Lipcare balm.

Having never used any of their products I didn't really know what to expect, but I was really impressed with it. The tube it comes in makes it really easy to apply and it doesn't go on too think. It lasts a good amount of time too, which means you don't have to reapply for quite a while after. I use this as part of my morning make-up routine.

My final lip balm essential is the Nivea Lip Butter in Raspberry Rose. This is my throughout the day lip balm because the tin is really easy to stick in your hand bag or jacket pocket and it is really good. The raspberry one is my favourite purely because it smells so good, but I have used the others and they are just as good. Nivea lip balms always seem to be the best in my opinion.

As well as lip balms I also use a lip scrub before bed. I have the Mint Julips lip scrub from Lush. It is great for getting rid of dead skin or leftover lip colour from your lips. I use this before I put my Nuxe lip balm on to make sure my lips are super soft. It is in essence a exfoliator for your lips.

While on the topic of exfoliators I think a body and face exfoliator are vital for winter. The body scrub I have been loving comes from Soap & Glory Sugar Crush body scrub.

Soap & Glory's scrubs are always amazing , this one has the freshest smell so it really wakes you up in the morning. It is so lemony and lovely!! I also love The Breakfast Scrub by Soap & Glory, I just don't think you can go wrong with any of the Soap & Glory products I also use a lot of the body butters.

My other exfoliator I want mention is actually my mum's again. It is another Gatineau product, its the Gatineau Radiance Enhancing Gommage. This product is crazy, it is quite hard to explain, but it isn't like a normal exfoliator. It is a gel consistency which you rub onto the skin and leave for about 5 minuets, it then turns into a liquid as it removes all the dirty and impurities off your skin and when you wash it off it leaves your skin feeling amazing. The description on the QVC website is a lot better, but I just love this product because the texture is really soft and it is really quick and simple. It is the perfect product for a lazy girl like myself. at the moment it only comes in a duo on the QVC website.

From skincare I move onto make-up, and back onto my lips. I love wearing lipstick and recently I have been more and more of it. I have two favourites at the moment, although if I'm honest there are way more than two which I do.

My first one is a Mac one called Rebel. I got for my birthday back in March and have been wearing it all year, but I think it is a really wintery colour.

I really like all the Mac lipsticks so this is probably one of the reasons why this is one of my faves. I really like that it isn't as dark on as it looks in the bullet, but the colour is really pigmented, and lasts for ages. It also doesn't dry your lips out.

My other lip colour is the Rimmel Colour Rush Balm in The Redder the Better. This is a lovely lipstick alternative, it comes in a sort of pencil applicator like the Clinique Chubby Sticks. However, it is definitely more of a lipstick than a tinted balm. The colour is really pigmented and lasts ages like the Mac one. It is hugely moisturising on your lips and really light-weight so you almost forget you are wearing it.

My other make-up essentials are the Rimmel Wake-me Up foundation which you can get from Boots or Superdrug for around £8.99. It is my favourite foundation of the year and is always one I go back to again and again. I also use the concealer of the same brand.

I have also love the L'Oreal Superliner Perfect Slim in Black Intense. It is pretty much a felt-tip pen liquid eye liner.

The reason I love this eye liner is because it makes putting liquid eye liner on so much easier and quicker, it even makes doing winged eye liner a little easier. The tip is the perfect width to get a great line and it doesn't smudge as soon as you put it on your eyelid.

My last beauty essential is perfume. It's Chloe by Chloe and I love it! I only recently bought this but it is a fragrance that I have always liked, it is really feminine and pretty. Everything about it I love, the smell, the packaging, everything, I have been wearing it almost everyday since I got it.

Extras

These essentials are just some random ones which have been keeping me happy this winter.
My first one is Netflix! During the winter months sitting in bed in my PJ's watching TV and movies and Netflix makes that so much easier. I really like the new list feature which allows you to add a number of different things in a list so that you don't lose track of all the things you want to watch. My go to things to watch do tend to be TV shows, at the moment I am re-watching Skins, as I haven't watched the first few seasons since they were first broadcast. My all time favourite thing to watch on Netflix however has to be Gossip Girl!
Chuck and Blair Forever!!!!

I have always been a fan of Gossip Girl, before it was a TV programme I was reading the books and as soon as the programme started I was hooked. I do own all the box-sets, but sometimes its a lot easier just to watch it on Netflix because I don't have to have the hassle of trying to find them in my DVD collection. Netflix has recently got the final season added to the Gossip Girl section of it and that makes me really happy because it means I can share my love for this show with all my friends forever!!

My next random essential has to be Halcyon Days by Ellie Goulding and Prism By Katy Perry. These two albums have been on repeat in my car and on my laptop and on my phone! I have always been a huge fan of both these artists and these albums may be one of their best. I know Halcyon Days is a bigger version of the album Halcyon which Ellie released last year, Halcyon Days has all the Halcyon tracks plus a few extra and is really breath-taking. Me and Zoe went to see her last month at the Usher Hall and she was amazing, her voices is stunning and the album is so haunting some of the songs such as 'Dead in the Water' and 'I Know You Care' really get me all emotional. I honestly don't think there is a bad song on the album and I can't get enough of it.

Katy's album is just amazing, which really doesn't surprise me after the success of Teenage Dream and One of the Boys. Prism really does not disappoint in any way, it has so many good songs and is almost better than Teenage Dream, which I loved. I am really excited that I get to see her next year with my friends Zoe and Paige, I have seen her before, but she always puts a great show one and it will just be amazing to hear this album live. As people Katy Perry and Ellie Goulding are two of my fave celebrities, they just seem so nice and down to earth - the fact that the two of them are friends is an added bonus.

My final winter essential is Toffee Nut Lattes from Starbucks. Yep - I love Starbucks a lot and Christmas Starbucks is so so good. When the Christmas drinks come out I always really look forward to having my first Toffee Nut Latte, they just make me feel so warm inside and Christmasy. I do enjoy a Pumpkin Spice Latte, which come just before Christmas drink time, but they don't stay in store for that long, which does always disappoint me because they are good, but the fact that the Christmas drinks are now in-store from now till mid January does fill me with great joy!

So that is my Winter Essentials - I hope you liked, let me know in the comments any of your essentials.
